What does the man who gives Ponyboy a ride home notice?

In S.E. Hinton's The Outsiders, Ponyboy and his family endure many difficult moments, which all contribute to Ponyboy's evolution as a character. In a time that is both physically and emotionally exhausting, Ponyboy participates in the rumble, where he is badly injured, and then goes to visit Johnny, who dies while Ponyboy is there.
After Johnny's death, Ponyboy leaves the hospital and wanders the streets for hours before he is eventually picked up and offered a ride home by a young man driving by. The man does not say much to Ponyboy, except to comment that he looked as though he had been in a fight and to point out Ponyboy's injuries. Up until the conversation in the car, Ponyboy was not aware that he was badly injured; the adrenaline from the rumble and the stupor from Johnny's death had distracted Ponyboy from his own injuries. The man in the car makes Ponyboy aware that he is bleeding pretty badly from his head, and for the first time all night Ponyboy realizes he is in bad shape physically. While Ponyboy apologizes for bleeding all over the car seats, the man does not seem to mind too much and still takes Ponyboy home.

In The Outsiders, Ponyboy and the other greasers have just beaten the Socs in a rumble. He and Dallas decide to visit Johnny, who is in the hospital as a result of severe burns. While they are with him in the hospital, Johnny passes away.
Ponyboy starts to walk home. He is in a sort of stupor as a result of the rumble and the loss of his friend. A man offers him a ride home, and Ponyboy accepts. Once Ponyboy is in the car, the man asks, "Are you all right, kid? You look like you've been in a fight." Ponyboy confirms that he has been in a rumble. At this point, the man notices that Ponyboy is injured and is bleeding when he says, "Hate to tell you this, kiddo . . . but you're bleedin' all over my car seats." As he reaches up and touches his head, Ponyboy notices that his hand is then covered in blood. Ponyboy apologizes for the blood on the car seats, but the man doesn't seem to mind.
