What had Gatsby done for his father that shows his generosity?

When Mr. Gatz comes to his son's funeral, he tells Nick that Gatsby had

. . . come out to see [him] two years ago and bought [him] the house [he] live[s] in now. Of course we was broke up when he run off from home but I see now there was a reason for it. He knew he had a big future in front of him. And ever since he made a success he was very generous with me.

Gatsby's father says that his son actually purchased a house for him a couple of years ago, and he claims that Gatsby has been very generous with his family since he became a success. It is clear from this that he does not realize how his son has made his fortune, but he assumes the fortune must be legitimate (and not procured illegally). He is obviously incredibly proud of his son and takes joy in seeing Gatsby's big and luxurious house and all his beautiful things. Mr. Gatz also feels that his son's goodness is proven by both his childhood journal as well as how generous he has been with his father since then.

In the last chapter of the novel, Gatsby's father attends his son's funeral and witnesses for the first time Jay's spectacular home in person. Nick Carraway mentions that Gatsby's father is in awe of his son's accomplishments as he looks around the mansion. After the funeral, Gatsby's father says that his son was always an intelligent boy with big aspirations. When Nick asks Mr. Gatz when was the last time he saw his son, Gatsby's father says that two years ago, Jay came up to see him and bought him the home he lives at today. Jay Gatsby buying his father a home is one of the many examples of his generosity. After attaining his fortune, Jay Gatsby did not forget about his father and demonstrated his appreciation, generosity, and love by buying his father a home.
