Generally, our body consumes sugar (or glucose) to generate energy. However, when the body lacks sufficient level of the hormone insulin, another source of energy is used instead. In such a state, the body starts consuming fats for production of energy. The fat is converted to molecules known as ketones (which are acidic in nature), in the liver, and the same is sent to our bloodstream.
Ketoacidosis is a condition in which the blood contains elevated levels of ketone molecules. When this happens, the pH of our blood decreases significantly. This could be a fatal condition in extreme cases.
This condition is typically associated with Type I diabetes and is very rarely found in people suffering from Type II diabetes. This condition can also be a result of starvation and alcohol consumption.
Hope this helps.
