Mafatu's finally managed to get a fire going. It's taken him an awfully long time to find a fire stick to his liking—a large piece of bone-dry hardwood—but he's gotten there in the end. Foraging around on the beach, he also discovers a smaller piece of the same wood which he uses to rub against the larger, harder piece to generate a spark. After quite a bit of effort, and a fair amount of sweat, Mafatu makes fire. He's pretty pleased with his handiwork, though feeling a little weary from his exertions. The fire's quite an impressive sight, but Mafatu doesn't want it to get too big. He'll only make fire during the day, and even then it'll only be a small one. Mafatu's worried that if he makes too big a blaze, he'll attract the unwanted attention of cannibals on a distant island, or "eaters-of-men" as they're called.
