What were the letters that Andre sent to Jules about?

Sarah's Key by Tatiana de Rosnay switches back and forth between two narratives, the first being that of Sarah, a 10 year old Jewish girl living in Paris in 1942, and that of 45 year old Julia, living in Paris in 2002. The two never meet, but their stories become significantly intertwined.
In the 1942 timeline, when Sarah and Rachel make their escape from a detention camp, they eventually find the home of Jules and Genevieve Dufaure. The couple ends up acting as Sarah's parents, raising her to adulthood.
Andre, Edouard's father and Bertrand's grandfather, was the head of the family who moved into Sarah's apartment after her family was forcibly taken from it. He was there when cupboard was opened and revealed Michel's dead body.
In the 2002 timeline, after Edouard reveals to Julia what happened to Sarah and Michel, he also reveals that, for 10 years, Andre sent letters to Jules with money in them, to help take care of Sarah. He felt a responsibility towards her after all the terrible things that happened.
