The tundra is characterized by very low temperatures, limited drainage, and scanty rainfall. The land is almost entirely treeless and mostly covered in snow. During summer in tundras near Earth's poles, the sun shines for almost 24 hours every day. However, these summers are often short, lasting for about six to ten weeks, with temperatures less than 50 degrees Fahrenheit. The winters, on the other hand, are long, with temperatures averaging -20 to -30 degrees Fahrenheit. There are three types of tundra, that is, Alpine, Arctic, and Antarctic tundra.
The Arctic is a type of the tundra biome. It is characterized by extremely low temperatures averaging about -30 degrees Fahrenheit in winter, a permanently frozen layer of soil, and partially decomposed matter called permafrost. The short summers have temperatures that average 37 to 54 degrees Fahrenheit. The Arctic is in the Northern Hemisphere in Northern Alaska, Canada, and Siberia. Because of the permafrost, vegetation is scanty and consists mostly of low-growing plants such as herbs, grasses, and lichens.
Unlike Arctic tundra, Alpine tundra does not have permafrost. Also, its soils are better drained. The Alpine tundra biome is found in mountains worldwide, just above the tree line and below the snow line of a mountain. Examples of locations of the Alpine tundra include the Himalayas in Asia and the Andes in South America.
Finally, the Antarctic tundra is a lot like the Arctic tundra, with the difference that it is found in Antarctica, in the Southern Hemisphere.
