Arabs brought a great deal of new information to the Europeans. Arabs had extensive trade routes along the Silk Road and had ready access to Asian spices. Many Europeans tasted these spiced dishes while on Crusade and brought back a desire to cook with these spices upon their return to Europe. Arabs also showed the Europeans the benefits of paper and gunpowder. Arabs had access to the ancient Greek and Roman texts—many of which were banned by the Church due to their secular nature. Europeans' knowledge of ancient Greek and Roman philosophy was thus helped with contact from Arabic peoples. The Renaissance was largely spurred on by the fall of the Byzantine Empire in 1453. Arabs also gave Europeans mathematical advances—algebra is derived from an Arabic word. Arabs also demonstrated new medicine and the study of anatomy. This was due to the study of ancient Greek and Roman texts, and the Arabs did not have the strict laws against dissection as the Church did at the time.
