Leonardo da Vinci died in 1519, at the age of 67, probably of a stroke. The undisputed quintessential "Renaissance man," Leonardo had led an extraordinary life that included painting what is probably the world's most famous portrait, the mysterious "Mona Lisa," and inventing a whole raft of things that were never produced during his lifetime, but have proven to be far ahead of their time. These include the ball bearing, a diving suit for deepwater exploration, a prototype for a helicopter, a parachute, and a version of a machine gun.
Leonardo's love of experimentation sometimes had unexpected and negative consequences, however, as in his creation of the beautiful fresco, "The Last Supper." He tried using his own combination of ingredients in the paint placed directly on dry plaster, and this has not held up well, causing the piece to be constantly in restoration.
But this amazing man left a legacy that even among the giants of the Renaissance, is unmatched.
