Great Britain was successful in industrializing for many reasons. Geography and geology played a major part in its success. Britain was fortunate enough to be sitting on large coal deposits, which they used as fuel. The vast majority of these coal deposits were situated close to internal waterways. This allowed easy transport of the coal throughout the nation to the sites of industrialization.
However the true power behind the British industrialization was the Newcomen steam engine and the improvements made to it by James Watt—both men were from the British empire. Not only did this engine make coal mines more productive, but it allowed the British empire to make better use of its many resources, such as cotton grown in the Americas. Previous production mills were run by water and subject to seasonal variations. The steam engine allowed Great Britain to produce more goods quickly.
