Anne Frank feels lonely and neglected throughout her time in the Secret Annex because she receives very little support from the others who are in hiding. Her older sister and her mother do not provide her with the emotional support that she craves. Her constant feeling of loneliness is the reason why she so diligently wrote in her diary. She misses the days before the Nazi occupation and writes frequently in her early entries of her whimsical days with her friends. After the retreat into the Secret Annex, Anne writes about her daily schedule and how she is punished for every minor infraction she makes. She does not feel that anyone understands her feelings or appreciates her contributions in the Secret Annex. Anne does feel a connection to her father and strives to keep his good opinion of her, but he is not capable of giving her all that she needs due to the unending frustration of living in hiding.
Since Anne was only fourteen when she moved into the Secret Annex, she is often unable to articulate her concerns in a way that will allow the adults around her will understand why she acts like she does, further isolating her from the group. All of the inhabitants, including Anne, feel fear, anxiousness, and isolation because of their situation. Without the ability to express her concerns, Anne retreats back to her diary for comfort. She spends the majority of her time away from the others in the Secret Annex, and she relies on her own determination to make it through her days in hiding.
