Dr. Hawthorne and Sam, the onion seller, are mentioned in Chapter Twenty Five of the book Holes. The two are medical practitioners in Green Lake Town. Dr. Hawthorne uses modern science to treat his patients while Sam is a type of herbalist that specializes in onion concoctions of all sorts. According to Sam, onions eaten raw are excellent health boosters. He also sells all kinds of onion “ointments, lotions, syrups and pastes” for different maladies. He even has a special onion ointment for baldness that Dr. Hawthorne also seems to use. Thus the two, Sam and Dr. Hawthorne, appear to co-exist happily, each one plying his trade for the betterment of the townspeople.
Another reason why Dr. Hawthorne does not resent Sam for selling his herbs in the town is because he knows that the people do not take chances and would still see him for treatment after seeing Sam.
The story of Dr. Hawthorne, Sam, and Kate Barlow happen many years before Stanley’s time. It is included in the bigger story so as to explain the history of the Green Lake area and, maybe, also explain how the good school teacher, Kate Barlow, turned into an outlaw.
