Tempête en juin (Storm in June) is the first novel in Suite Française (a series that the author Irène Némirovsky intended to include five novels, though she died in Auschwitz before she could complete it). It was written between 1940 and 1942.
The story features a fairly wide cast of characters; they can be generally categorized into a handful of families. Let's go over each of the families featured in this narrative and discuss what happens to them at (or by) the end of the book.
Pericand: the Pericands have five sons. By the end of the novel, Philippe, the oldest son, has been stoned to death by a group of boys. The elder Monsieur Pericand (the five sons' grandfather) is accidentally left behind in his wheelchair and he dies shortly thereafter. Hubert, another of the sons, almost dies of hunger but survives.
Langelet: After defrauding a young couple, Charles Langelet is killed in a street accident.
Michaud: Maurice and Jeanne return to Paris at the end of the book, having lost nearly everything, and without news of the whereabouts of their son, Jean-Marie. But at the very end of the story, they receive word that Jean-Marie is safe; with the help of the Sabarie family, he is recovering from wounds at a small farm.
Sabarie: the family is taking care of Jean-Marie Michaud at their farm.
Corbin: Monsieur Corbin is gravely injured in a bomb attack. His mistress, Arlette, saves Hubert Pericand from starvation.
