I am not sure which scene from Romeo and Juliet you are referencing, so I decided to focus on Act 1, Scene 1. In this scene, Benvolio is a very good friend to Romeo. He asks him what is troubling him, listens to Romeo explain why he is sad, and then offers him support and advice. Romeo explains that he loves Rosaline, but she does not love him back. He is completely heartbroken. Benvolio responds with, "Alas, that love, so gentle in his view, Should be so tyrannous and rough in proof!" Here, he is saying that love seems wonderful, but in reality, it is often difficult and hurtful. He is empathizing with Romeo. Later, he even goes on to say he is sad and crying because his dear friend and cousin, Romeo, is upset. This shows that he is a good friend to Romeo because he intently listens to him and responds with care. Later, after allowing Romeo to express his feelings, Benvolio offers advice to Romeo when he says, "By giving liberty unto thine eyes. Examine other beauties." Benvolio tells Romeo to look at other women as a way to get over Rosaline. He gives this advice later in the conversation after Romeo has had time to express his sadness, which shows Benvolio's care and maturity.
This scene gives us insight into both Romeo and Benvolio. In this scene, Romeo is moping and completely heartbroken. We see that he is a highly emotional individual. In this scene we also see Benvolio behave very maturely. He doesn't tease Romeo. Instead he acts with patience, compassion, and maturity. He listens to his friend and then appropriately responds with reassurance and later advice.
