What were the drawbacks of the constitution of 1791?

The French Constitution of 1791 did a lot to move France past its previous feudal arrangements and empower the citizens with a larger degree of civic power and responsibility. However, it did have some significant drawbacks that are worth mentioning. First of all, it did not extend the franchise and equal rights to all citizens. Women did not have access to all the personal freedoms that men were granted by the constitution, such as freedom to own property or full freedom of expression. They were also not eligible to vote. The constitution also differentiated between landowners, wealthy Frenchmen, and the poor; the constitution granted the former more privileges, benefits, and representation. Only two-thirds of adult Frenchmen had the right to vote. Another drawback was that the main legislative body, the National Assembly, was not directly elected. This meant that voters had little direct influence on lawmakers, who were not directly responsible to the needs and wishes of the electorate. In theory, the king held veto rights in order to protect the rights of the citizens, but the king was not an elected official. Therefore, voters had little they could do to influence the laws that were passed under this constitution.
