Dill is running away from a dysfunctional home life. His mother seems to be lavishing all her attention on her new husband, and Dill feels rather left out. He subsequently spins quite a yarn to Atticus, saying that his stepfather chained him up in the basement. But the reality, as he eventually confesses, is that he feels that his folks just aren't interested in him. Whatever the reason, Dill no longer feels at home in Meridian; Maycomb's much more to his liking. After all, he has many fun memories of the place, usually revolving around his various escapades with Jem and Scout. Maycomb's a place where he can feel accepted, welcomed, where he can truly be himself. At home he's ignored; in Maycomb he can be the center of attention. It's not really surprising that he's chosen to run away.
