Anne Frank described the terrible events occurring outside of the Annex; she felt that one day she and her family would be destroyed by the war. Still, she remained hopeful that the evil surrounding her would eventually pass and peace would prevail. She wrote in July of 1944,
"I see the world being slowly transformed into a wilderness; I hear the approaching thunder that, one day, will destroy us too. I feel the suffering of millions. And yet, when I look up at the sky, I somehow feel that everything will change for the better, that this cruelty too shall end, that peace and tranquility will return once more."
This shows that even though she thought she might die, she also believed that the Nazis would be defeated and peace would prevail.
The developments inside of the Annex greatly influenced all who stayed there. Food shortages and the lack of space made things difficult, and minor disagreements were magnified in such a confined space during such a stressful time. One event that changed everyone inside of the Annex was the night that a thief broke into the building. This intensified the inhabitants' desire to leave the Annex, as they believed it would only be a short time until they were discovered. Outside of the Annex, the invasion of Normandy on D-Day gave those inside the Annex a great deal of hope that they would be rescued. Unfortunately, the Franks and all others inside of the Annex were found by the Nazis.

How does Anne describe the terrible events that were happening outside? How did the developments inside and outside the Annex affect Anne and the others?
