Germany's main problem was its location. Located between two of its enemies, Russia and France, Germany faced a two-front war from the beginning. While the Schlieffen Plan was supposed to take out France quickly, so that the German Army could focus on Russia, France proved harder to defeat than was originally planned. The German navy was essentially bottled up at Kiel, thanks to the presence of the British naval blockade around the North Sea. This blockade ultimately starved the German people into submission and forced the abdication of Kaiser Wilhelm II.
Germany's next problem was its allies. The Ottoman Empire had long been called the "sick man of Europe" and proved to be little help to the German war effort against Russia. Austria-Hungary was a little better, but it was quite weak, as well. One potential German ally, Italy, was swayed with the promise of more Adriatic coastline territory, so it switched sides and joined the Entente. On the Western Front, the war turned into the German army versus France and Britain——two nations with vast supplies of manpower and material, especially since they were receiving aid from the United States. Germany, while possessing a strong industrial capacity, could not last in a protracted war; by 1918, Germans were having to decide whether to use nitrates for fertilizer or explosives.
Germany's next problem was its failure to win the propaganda war. The German army was portrayed as the "Hun" to an American audience, thanks to the British navy cutting the German transatlantic cable early in the war. This ensured that only the Entente view of affairs was told to the American people. While some Belgian civilians were killed by the German army, the Germans did not wantonly attack noncombatants. Britain and France portrayed the war as a war for civilization, which led many Americans to support war against Germany.
