The title of this source is "Cuba: Historical exception or vanguard in the anticolonial struggle?" and its author is the revolutionary leader Ernesto "Che" Guevara. Written as an essay, it was published on April 9, 1961, a little over one week before the failed American attempt to overthrow Castro's government in the Bay of Pigs invasion. Its title fairly neatly summarizes its subject matter. Guevara, born in Argentina, was eager to "export" the Cuban Revolution to other Latin American countries which, he argued, were subject to many of the same material deprivations and political oppression as Cuba. He lists a few things that made the Cuban Revolution "exceptional," like the leadership of Fidel Castro and the fact that Cuban peasants had developed a "greater class consciousness" than in other places because they had been mobilized to meet the demands of "capitalist agriculture." Mainly, however, he argues that the conditions that contributed to revolution in Cuba exist elsewhere in Latin America. Most important, he claims, was the fact that Latin American countries had large landholding classes who profited from peasant labor. This created a large, "proletarianized" force of people that could be mobilized to overthrow the imperialist powers that held sway over Latin America. So at a time when the Cuban Revolution looked increasingly under threat, Guevara was arguing for the spread of similar revolutions throughout Central and South America.
