The Parthenon is a temple dedicated to the Greek goddess Athena. It is located on a hill in Athens, Greece. It took many years to build and was completed in 432 BC. Inside resided a large gold and ivory statue of Athena.
The temple also served as a symbol to proclaim to the world the success of Athens in defeating Persian armies. It brought glory to Athens. In addition to being used as a religious temple, it was also used as a treasury.
The Parthenon served its primary purpose by being the religious center of Athens for more than one thousand years. Eventually, in the 5th century AD the temple was converted to a Christian church and later to a mosque. Surviving sculptures from the Parthenon can be found in several museums but many remain in Athens.
