The internet can distract students from daily activities, preventing students from completing homework and assignments. It can also cause a false sense of power over peers. If you post something nasty about someone online, it doesn't have the same sense of consequence as it might if you were to say the same thing in person.
Along with the social aspects of the internet, it can affect student's negatively when they do research for projects. Depending on the site chosen, the beliefs and opinions on any particular topic could be skewed by religion, socio-economic standing, and feelings of the author. This can negatively affect the work a student does based on this information.
The Internet can affect a student in negative ways. One way is that a student might not be able to detect bias in a site or to determine the accuracy of the information on a given site. Therefore, a student may draw inaccurate conclusions or develop thoughts and opinions based on incorrect information.
Another negative impact is that a student may spend too much time on the Internet. This may lead to fewer direct, face-to-face social interactions with people. A student might think that they know how to communicate with others based on text messages or Internet-based communication, but the student could have a lessened ability to communicate with somebody in person.
There are other negative impacts. A student might think he or she has many friends based on a Facebook account but, in reality, may have few close personal friendships. A student might also be bullied as a result of the Internet. This cyberbullying could have deadly consequences; some students have committed suicide as a result of this kind of bullying.
A student might see pictures of others and think that his or her own life is lacking. The student may not realize that these photos may not really show the true life of others.
A student who spends a lot of time on the Internet may not get enough physical activity. This could lead to weight gain or to a state of poor physical shape.
Spending a lot of time on the Internet could harm family relations as a student might spend less time with family members. A person could get addicted to the Internet and feel that he or she must constantly have access to it in order to stay connected. A person may pay more attention to a cell phone or computer than to other aspects of his or her life.
There are many ways that the Internet can be harmful to a student.
