If you want to argue that Amir is an honorable man in The Kite Runner, you should deal with Amir's character development. Amir does not act honorably toward Hassan when they are children. He sometimes tries to establish his superiority over Hassan because Hassan is illiterate (his ethnic group cannot be educated) and part of a minority in terms of ethnicity and religion. Hassan and his father, Ali, are also servants to Amir and his father, Baba. Even though Amir and Hassan grow up like brothers, Amir sometimes lets social pressure and his own pride get in the way, and he mistreats Hassan. The pivotal scene occurs after Amir has cut down the last kite in the kite-fighting tournament; Hassan, who is the best kite runner, goes to chase down the kite for Amir's prize. Hassan is assaulted in the alley by Assef and his two friends, and Amir does nothing to stop it. He feels guilty but projects his guilt onto Hassan and continues to lash out at him. He eventually frames Hassan for theft to try to get him kicked out of the house, simply so Amir does not have to face him every day. Even though Baba wants to let Hassan stay, Hassan and Ali are so insulted that they leave, and Amir never sees them again.
As an adult, Amir continues to feel guilty about how he wronged his oldest friend. When Baba's best friend Rahim Khan calls to tell Amir he should come to Pakistan and that he knows a way for Amir "to be good again," Amir goes to see Rahim Khan. However, once he is told he must find Hassan's son, Sohrab, Amir hesitates because of the danger to himself. He feels like it is not his responsibility, but he soon changes his mind and decides to atone for his sins along with his father's (it is also revealed that Hassan was Baba's illegitimate son). Amir learns later that Rahim Khan meant for Amir to adopt Sohrab, and Amir does take Sohrab back to the U.S. with him, after enduring a beating from Taliban leader Assef and an enormous amount of red tape that comes along with the adoption process. Amir defends Sohrab when his father-in-law questions Amir's concern for a Hazara boy. Most readers probably feel that Amir has redeemed himself by the end of the novel. Although he can never go back and undo what he did to Hassan, he can become honorable by acting honorably toward Sohrab.
