Did Alice follow a rabbit or a dormouse?

The story “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” starts with Alice and her sister seated by the bank. Alice’s sister is reading a book, which Alice dismisses as boring, as it does not have illustrations. Alice is therefore left to herself and is quite bored.
It is in this setting that Alice suddenly spies a white rabbit. The white rabbit appears to be in a rush to get somewhere. In fact, Alice hears the white rabbit say to itself, “Oh dear! Oh dear! I shall be too late!” It then removes “a watch out of its waistcoat-pocket,” looks at it and hurries on. Alice’s curiosity is piqued by the fact that the rabbit has a waistcoat pocket and a watch. She has never before come across a rabbit that has any of these things. She therefore follows the rabbit all the way to a big rabbit hole beneath a hedge. The hole starts out as a tunnel and then dips into an exceedingly deep well. It leads Alice to Wonderland.
