I need help with the following assignment: Identify the part of speech of the bolded word in each of the sentences below. There was a huge basket in the dining hall. This type of sport is very dangerous. Give me your e-mail address.

It is important to note that the same word can function as a different part of speech in English depending on where it is placed in a sentence and its context in the sentence. In the sentences you provide, the parts of speech are fairly obvious. Adjectives describe nouns, giving us more information about them. A basket is a noun and the word huge tells us more about what kind of basket it is. An adverb describes a verb, adjective, or other adverb: very tells us more about the adjective dangerous, used to describe sport. (As an side, most writing guides advise us to use adverbs sparingly.) Finally, a verb conveys the action of a sentence and is the most important word in the sentence. In the last sentence, we don't have a subject, making it a command. What action is commanded? The action to "give." The important point, clearly, is not these particular words but understanding how they function.

In order to  complete this assignment, you may need to review the basic parts of speech. They include:
Nouns: Nouns denote one or more people, animals, place, things, or ideas. They can serve as subjects or objects of sentences or of prepositions.
Pronouns: Pronouns stand in for nouns and have nouns as antecedents. They can function in any of the roles in a sentence that nouns can.
Adjectives: Adjectives modify or describe nouns. Thus we can have a "beautiful flower" or a "fast runner."
Verbs: Verbs describe an action and are the main part of a sentence's predicate. All sentences require a finite verb.
Adverbs: Adverbs can modify verbs or adjectives, e.g. "The young man graciously offered his seat to the elderly woman" or "extremely loud music".
There was a huge basket in the dining hall.: The bolded word describes the noun "basket".
This type of sport is very dangerous.: The bolded word describes the adjective dangerous.

Give me your e-mail address.: The bolded word describes an action.
