This is a good question because it could be argued that multiple characters share the mantle of being this story's protagonist; however, Connor's role in the story edges him out over Risa and Lev. Connor is the first character that readers are introduced too, and while that doesn't automatically make a character the protagonist, it does help readers associate him as a leading character. Additionally, it is his actions that drive much of the plot forward and force the other characters to respond to his actions. This is very evident when Connor and Lev first meet. It is not a nice, friendly meeting. Connor rips Lev out of the car that Lev is in and essentially uses Lev as a human shield. Once Connor discovers that Lev is a tithe, Connor makes it his mission to "free" Lev. Connor's actions also affect Risa. For example, Risa is forced to help care for a storked baby that Connor impulsively saves. Finally, if you consider the story's main antagonist to be Roland, then the protagonist is who Roland fights most strongly against. This is definitely Connor.
