The books in Alonso Quijana's library are key to understanding his motivation in Cervantes's masterpiece Don Quixote. Alonso, who re-brands himself as the knight errant Don Quixote, is so enamored with the tales of gallantry and adventure of the knights in the many courtly romances he has in his library shelves that he decides to live his own life as though he were the hero in one of his own favorite stories. He becomes Don Quixote and gives into his delusion so completely that refuses to take the rules of the world for what they are, instead living as though his life were a novel. All of his actions after deciding to be a knight errant and setting off on his ill-defined quest are guided by the tropes and standard plot points of the types of books he most likes to read.
