Gaius Julius Caesar (100–44 B.C.) is one of the greatest military generals and statesmen in world history. He played a critical role in changing his country from the declining Roman Republic into the powerful Roman Empire.
As a military leader, Caesar expanded the territory of his country through a series of battles across Europe and the Mediterranean region. He conquered Gaul, Germany, Britain, and defeated Egypt. His military achievement helped expand the power of Rome and spread Roman culture throughout the conquered lands.
As a statesman, Caesar took a number of measures to solidify his regime and benefit its people. He granted Roman citizenship to the people of the new territories so that they could enjoy the same rights as those in Italy. He made great efforts to relieve the poor by distributing land to them, cutting down taxes, creating job opportunities for them, and encouraging the rich to offer help. He also managed to mitigate the financial crisis as a result of the civil wars.
Besides, Caesar introduced the Julian Calendar, which replaced the inaccurate Roman Calendar, and wrote some well-recognized literary works. For these reasons, he is also known as a great mathematician and an outstanding man of letters.
