Would you say Facebook is a boon or a curse?

When considering whether Facebook is a boon or a curse, it helps to consider how the social media space fits in today's society. Facebook may be considered a boon for marketers, as they have the ability to reach larger target audiences without the high costs of traditional advertising. In addition, marketers can promote products, increase brand awareness, and take advantage of word of mouth advertising. Customers and other members of target audiences can easily share information about the product or service with those among their social circles they believe may be interested.
Facebook also allows families and friends separated by distance to stay closely connected. Users can upload photos and videos related to important events in their lives. Sharing events this way is more intimate than describing them through a letter or phone conversation.
However, for many Facebook can be a curse. Middle school, high school, and college students can become victims of cyber bullying if they have social media accounts and allow peer groups access to them. This can have serious negative consequences, as victims can experience low self-esteem and may even consider self-harm if the cyber bullying goes on long enough or is severe enough.
Social media can ruin an individual's reputation, even when the individual has not necessarily hurt others or done anything to misrepresent him or herself. The same can be said for social media marketing. A company's reputation can be hurt by a single user spreading false information. The marketer must then downplay the information or refute it in some way, without coming across as being defensive. Any response to negative feedback must be addressed right away (Brookins, 2017), in an effort to mitigate the negative effects.
