Framton Nuttel is a highly nervous individual. That's why he's been ordered by his doctor to stay in the country for a rest cure. We get the impression that Framton doesn't socialize all that much, which is why his sister has given him introductions to some families in the area, including—fatefully—the Sappletons. Our initial impression is confirmed when Framton clumsily tries to engage with Mrs. Sappleton in conversation. All he can talk about are his various ailments, which is seldom a matter of interest to anyone else, and Mrs. Sappleton is no expectation, as she tries hard to stifle a yawn when he's talking to her. Poor old Framton does come across as a bit of a bore. Luckily for the mischievous Vera, he's also rather naive. Vera figures Framton out pretty quickly, realizing that his gullibility makes him the perfect victim for her cruel little prank.
