Malthace, or Thacia, becomes a very good friend to Leah. She's one of the very few people to get close to Daniel's younger sister, in either the physical or the emotional sense. To the outside world, Leah's a troubled young lady; many believe that she's literally possessed by demons. But Thacia is more understanding. She sees someone very special beneath the frail, fragile exterior.
As the two young friends begin to form a close bond, Leah starts to look up to Thacia, wanting to be just like her. Thacia is incredibly kind to Leah in a way that no one else has ever been before. She gives her gifts such as an embroidered girdle, perfume, and a hand mirror. Thanks to Thacia, Leah's able to come out of her shell a little bit and start taking a keen interest in activities of other girls her age, something that would've been unthinkable without her special friend.
