In The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao, there are multiple references to science fiction, fantasy, and comics, and they seem, at times, to consume Oscar's thoughts. There are a few reasons that Oscar might be obsessed with these genres.
The first, and simplest, is that they provide entertainment. Oscar is a fanboy of sorts who can't consume enough sci-fi and fantasy, in whatever forms they may come—comics, film, television, graphic novels, and so on. To fully understand Oscar's obsession with these genres, though, it helps to think a little beyond the surface.
On a deeper level, they provide a form of escapism for Oscar. When he's immersed in a good sci-fi or fantasy story, he can forget about his own loneliness, his family curse, and the day-to-day difficulties of living.
More importantly, Oscar identifies with the characters and stories in these genres. There is a great deal of apocalyptic imagery in the book, which runs parallel to the imagery in many of the sci-fi and fantasy works that Oscar reads. So they reflect his real-world sensibilities in this way. And despite Oscar's difficulty navigating the real world, he very much wants to be its protector at times.
In an understated scene in the novel, Oscar dresses up as the Doctor from Doctor Who for Halloween. This may seem like an unimportant detail, but it provides a strong example of his connection to these genres. The Doctor is an outsider who has taken it upon himself to protect humanity. But more importantly, he is alone in the universe and is constantly seeking companionship. This choice of costume reflects Oscar's deep connection to these texts, and understanding the sci-fi and fantasy allusions can help us to better understand Oscar.
