Many of the symbols in The Glory Field have multiple meanings. I will look at three of the symbols that have multiple layers of meaning and let you figure out some others. One of the symbols in the book is the Glory Field itself. The Lewis family receives 8 acres in Curry, South Carolina, after the Civil War, and they name their land the Glory Field. The life of a sharecropper is difficult, but the land stands for more than just land. It stands for freedom and promise, even if the promise of freedom takes some time to come true for the Lewis family. The family struggles to make the land profitable and leaves for the north, but, in the end, they reunite in the Glory Field. It is there that Malcolm Lewis, one of the modern-day descendants of the family, realizes the power of his identity and the strength of his family's history. The field symbolizes the strength of the family and its growth from its strong roots in South Carolina.
Another important element of symbolism in the novel concerns the shackles that Malcolm inherits. When he receives the shackles in his Harlem apartment, he feels their weight, as well as pain, that they have delivered to the people who wore them through the centuries. He realizes that there are both tangible shackles and intangible shackles, such as racism and the violence of the KKK, that has affected his family throughout the centuries. After receiving the shackles, he plays a musical piece full of pain, and he thinks about his parents, his drug-addicted cousin Shep, and his other ancestors. The shackles are a symbol of the way his ancestors were brought from Africa in chains and the way Malcolm's family has suffered. At the same time, the shackles symbolize the way in which his family has overcome this pain to be substantial and creative.
A symbol in the book that also has many layers of meaning is a tree. Lizzy, a fourteen-year-old slave, thinks about the men she heard about who were lynched after they attacked a white man. In this sense, a tree represents horror and brutality. At the same time, she and Lem climb a tree to evade detection when they are escaping from the slave plantation and eventually come across Union soldiers. Therefore, trees represent both death and freedom. Perhaps you can find other symbols in this book that have multiple meanings.

Could you write an analysis on the symbolism of the Glory Field in The Glory Field? Thank you.
