In the period 1600 to 1700, male Americans wore linen clothes, with cloaks and woolen stockings. Their female counterparts dressed in long, brightly colored clothes with hooded cloaks. Wealthy men wore black suits for church ceremonies and satin or velvet waistcoats on most occasions. Other common clothing for men included the breeches, straight loose coats, and large wigs. The dressing style of the American colonists of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries was similar to, but slightly behind, that of the rest of Europe.
In Britain, the second half of the seventeenth century was characterized by huge imports of different kinds of fabric and dyes from various parts of the world. This meant that women had a wide selection of fabrics and accessories to choose from. Cloth items such as muffs, hoods, and face masks were very popular among the womenfolk. In the 1690s, elaborate top-knot hairstyles were also fashionable. Other popular clothes for women were the closed and open dress. In other parts of Europe, men wore doublets, breeches, waistcoats, wigs, lace cravats, and canes, while women wore long gowns. The fontange headdresses and mantuas also became quite popular. The style during this time was called baroque and featured “a lot of ornamentation, curved forms and freely flowing lines.”
