The South benefited from the provisions of the Constitution in some ways. The Constitution protected people’s property by preventing the government from taking it away. Thus, Southerners who owned slaves knew the government could not take away their slaves. The slave trade also would not be banned for twenty years. Until after the Civil War, slavery was not illegal throughout the United States.
The Constitution allowed for the counting of some of the slaves in the population count of each state. The Three-Fifths Compromise said that every five slaves would count as three people. This increased the South’s population, allowing for the South to have more representatives in the House of Representatives. Since the slaves had no freedoms, people in the North did not want the slaves to be counted at all when a state’s population was being determined.
The Constitution benefited the South in other ways. It separated the powers of the different branches of government. This prevented any branch of government from becoming too strong. The Constitution also reserved some powers for the states, which gave the states some power. Many Southerners wanted the states to have significant power.
