When she realizes that death is inevitable, the girl (Marilyn) asks for permission to call Gerry, her brother.
Accordingly, the EDS pilot switches on the space transmitter and makes an inquiry about Gerry. He receives an answer that Gerry and two of his colleagues are out on a helicopter mission. The EDS pilot asks to be connected through to the radio in Gerry's helicopter but is told that the radio is out of commission.
When Gerry finally gets to speak with Marilyn, he is devastated to discover that his sister is going to die. Despite his personal grief, Gerry does everything he can to comfort Marilyn and to assure her of his love.
Before the call ends, Marilyn also comforts Gerry by telling him that she will always be with him. He may not see her, but he will know that she is beside him.
