How did the Rosicky family differ from the Marshall family?

Before he rocks up at the Rosicky residence, Dr. Burleigh pays a call at the Marshalls' farm. The Marshalls are very wealthy, with plenty of stock, animal feed, and expensive farm machinery. And yet the place is in something of a mess. The woman of the house—who's just given birth to another child—has too many children already, and her house-keeping skills leave something to be desired. So even after spending the whole night there, dealing with a particularly difficult pregnancy, the doctor doesn't want to stay in such a slovenly place for a moment longer than he has to. He won't even have breakfast there.
So it's such a nice change when he arrives to see old Mr. Rosicky. Despite his relative poverty in relation to the Marshalls, Rosicky is able to offer the doctor a much warmer, more welcoming environment when he comes to visit. Certainly, no one else make such good, strong coffee. The implication is that the Marshalls have lost something in their headlong pursuit of wealth. Whereas the Rosickys, though working every bit as hard as their richer neighbors, have remained true to themselves.
