Finite Mathematics, Chapter 1, 1.2, Section 1.2, Problem 42

Use the formula for converting Fahrenheit and Celsius to convert each temperature :
$\displaystyle \rm{F} = \frac{9}{5}\rm{C} + 32$ and $\displaystyle \rm{C} = \frac{5}{9} (\rm{F} - 32)$
a.) $58 ^\circ \rm{F}$ to Celsius
b.) $-20 ^\circ \rm{F}$ to Celsius
c.) $50 ^\circ \rm{C}$ to Fahrenheit

At $58 ^\circ \rm{F}$, we have

$
\begin{equation}
\begin{aligned}
C &= \frac{5}{9} (58 - 32)\\
\\
C &= \frac{5}{9} (26)\\
\\
C &= 14.44^\circ
\end{aligned}
\end{equation}
$

At $-20 ^\circ \rm{F}$, we have

$
\begin{equation}
\begin{aligned}
C &= \frac{5}{9} (-20 - 32)\\
\\
C &= \frac{5}{9} (-52)\\
\\
C &= -28.89^\circ
\end{aligned}
\end{equation}
$

At $50 ^\circ \rm{C}$, we have

$
\begin{equation}
\begin{aligned}
F &= \frac{9}{5} (50) + 32\\
\\
F &= 90 + 32\\
\\
F &= 122 ^\circ
\end{aligned}
\end{equation}
$
