Ilsa Hermann visits 33 Himmel Street (where Liesel Meminger lives) to give Liesel a black journal.
Previously, Liesel had destroyed a book in Ilsa's library. After tearing pages from the book, Liesel had written an apology to Ilsa. In her note, Liesel suggested that she stop frequenting Ilsa's library as a punishment for sabotaging one of her books.
Instead of castigating Liesel, Ilsa shows up at 33 Himmel Street to present her young friend with a journal. She tells the latter that she writes well. Ilsa gives Liesel a journal so that she can write her own stories. Additionally, Ilsa tells Liesel not to punish herself.
Touched by the older woman's generosity, Liesel invites Ilsa in for coffee. In the kitchen, the two enjoy coffee and bread with jam. Liesel promises Ilsa that she will show the latter any writing she finishes. The two part on amicable terms.
