It's important to note that one of the reasons Holling Hoodhood calls his house the "perfect house" is because that is how his dad first referred to it. His dad believes it is the perfect house because it is "smack in the middle of town." It's not on the north side or the south side. It's exactly in between, and that is what Mr. Hoodhood wants in order to maximize obtaining future potential clients. He doesn't want to alienate anybody, and he wants to maximize views of his property by other people. Holling tells readers that it is absolutely not the perfect house. When Holling calls it that, there is a heavy dose of sarcasm and bitterness being used. This is a reflection of how he feels about his father. Holling's father wants everything to look perfect and awesome. The house's concrete is whiter than anywhere else. There are no cracks. The bushes are perfectly trimmed, and the house always has fresh paint. Unfortunately, the house is about the only thing that the Hoodhood family has together. Inside the house, the family dynamic is a wreck. Holling's house is only "perfect" on the outside.
