What is the setting of Wonder?

The physical setting of the book is Upper Manhattan, New York City. The bulk of the story takes place in the townhouse in which August Pullman and his family live and at August's new school, Beecher Prep. Toward the end of the book, August and the entire fifth grade class from Beecher Prep go on a trip to Broarwood Nature Reserve in Pennsylvania, which is described as being a four-hour bus ride from where they live.
The context of the story is that August Pullman is a boy who was born with severe facial deformation and has, as a result, been home-schooled by his mother up until the start of the book. At that point, the decision is made that August would benefit from going into a normal school environment for his fifth grade year. The story details the ups and downs of August's first year at Beecher Prep and describes what he and his classmates learn about friendship and kindness.

The setting of Wonder, by R.J. Palacio, takes place in Upper Manhattan. The school that Auggie attends is called Beecher Prep. Both his home and his school are in the same area of Upper Manhattan. Auggie was born with several birth defects that have left his face deformed. This book focuses on the concepts of friendship and accepting people for who they are.
Many people misjudge Auggie because of his physical defects and make fun of him, often to cover up their own insecurities and their own feelings of being uncomfortable around him. However, Auggie has the same interests and feelings as any child and wants to be accepted by his peers.
He also is very smart. A few students reach out to Auggie and eventually become good friends of his. By the end of the story, Auggie has developed more friendships. He is awarded the exemplary student honor. After many struggles, Auggie survived fifth grade.

The setting of Wonder is North River Heights, which Auggie says is at the top of Manhattan (there is no such neighborhood in reality, but perhaps it is supposed to be Morningside Heights or Washington Heights, which are real-life neighborhoods in northern Manhattan). Auggie's family, including his parents and older sister Via, live in North River Heights. The novel also takes place at Beecher Prep, which is the private middle school that Auggie attends in fifth grade after being homeschooled by his mother. At the end of the book, the fifth grade goes on a trip to a nature reserve. The location of the trip is the Broarwood Nature Preserve in Pennsylvania. This trip makes Auggie anxious, as he has never spent the night away from home. The story takes place in the current day.

In Wonder, a novel by R.J. Palacio, Auggie Pullman is ten years old and dealing with the combined difficulties of health problems and disabilities; he is starting the fifth grade at a private school after having been homeschooled his whole life. A lot of his troubles come from being bullied by another student named Julian. The story is told from the viewpoint of several people, and we get a pretty wide view of Auggie's world and the people around him.
Wonder is set in New York City in the modern day (the book was published in 2012). A good deal of the book takes place at Auggie's new school, Beecher Prep, as well as his family's townhouse. Both are in the Upper Manhattan area of New York City.
