The society depicted in We is a dystopian one in which years of war has led all surviving citizens to be grouped together into a single city which resembles the city-states of medieval Italy. This state is ruled by a single "Benefactor" and order is kept by forcing all citizens to adhere to a timetable which tells them what to do and when. A police force known as the Guardians is responsible for ensuring everyone living in the state is living by the rules as imposed by the Benefactor. Any citizen who is found to be in breach of the rules is publicly executed, and any display of personal opinion or taste differing from what is accepted has been outlawed. This city state, with its ironically named "Benefactor," is known as the One State.
