Henry David Thoreau was an American essayist, and philosopher. He is best known for his book Walden and his essay "Civil Disobedience," an argument for disobedience against unfair governments. His essay “Civil Disobedience” gives the best evidence for where Thoreau stands on government. It is in this essay that Thoreau argues that a government that is least restrictive in governing is the best form of government.
Thoreau’s stance on government was that the best form of government is the one that gets out of the way of its people getting things done. In “Civil Disobedience,” he makes this idea of a less obstructive government clear by noting, “When it is most expedient, the governed are most let alone by it.” Thoreau believes in government but also knows that governmental regulations and bureaucracy can get in the way of people accomplishing things.
