Kamala rents an apartment from Sherrena at 18th and Wright. One night, the apartment catches fire. The blaze is started when one of Kamala's daughters knocks over a lamp when she gets out of bed. The fire completely destroys the apartment and kills Kamala's youngest daughter, who was only eight months old. The fire is clearly an accident, and this is subsequently confirmed by the fire inspector. Sherrena's main concern, however, is financial. She asks the fire inspector if she'll have to pay back her tenants' rent. After all, why should the tenants have to pay the month's rent for an apartment that no longer exists? But Sherrena needn't worry. To her great relief, she's told that she will not have to return any money to Lamar and Kamala.
