In the book Enchantress from the Stars by Sylvia Engdahl, Ilura dies. Many characters make sacrifices throughout the book. When the Imperials raid, Ilura sacrifices her life so that the enemy does not find the Federation ship. If the enemy had discovered the ship, they would have realized that the Federation is a more advanced civilization than the Imperials previously thought. It is not revealed who murdered Ilura until page 25, when Jarel thinks, "What excuse is there for taking off on an unauthorized jaunt into the woods and coming back more proud than sorry to have killed a 'savage' native woman?" With this statement, Jarel is referencing how Kevan murdered Ilura with a vaporizer when she jumped in front of him.
