Lennie does not go to jail in the novella Of Mice of Men. The first incident that takes place before the story begins happens in Weed. Apparently, Lennie grabbed a woman and would not let go. The woman claimed that Lennie assaulted her but Lennie and George were able to escape without being caught. Towards the end of the novella, Lennie accidentally murders Curley's wife. Curley's wife allows Lennie to pet her hair, and he begins pulling on it. Curley's wife attempts to pull away and begins to scream which makes Lennie panic. When she attempts to escape, Lennie accidentally breaks her neck. Curley then forms a lynch mob to hunt down Lennie, but George finds him first and shoots him in the back of the head to prevent Lennie from experiencing a painful death. Essentially, George kills Lennie before the authorities can arrest him or Curley's lynch mob murders him.
