College Algebra, Chapter 1, 1.2, Section 1.2, Problem 32

Suppose that Jan hit 41 more home runs than Christian during his career. Together they hit 1469 home runs. How many home runs did Christian hit?

If $x$ is the number of hit of Christian, then $x + 41$ is the number of hit of Jan. So..

$
\begin{equation}
\begin{aligned}

x + x + 41 =& 1469
&& \text{Model}
\\
\\
2x =& 1469 - 41
&& \text{Combine like terms}
\\
\\
x =& 714
&& \text{Solve for } x

\end{aligned}
\end{equation}
$

Thus, Christian did 714 home runs.
