I have an essay on 1984. I need to formulate a thesis statement, and I need help. I want a few intro points to talk about as well before I discuss my thesis (argument for the whole paper). This is the essay question: "Define the main concepts of the following: Newspeak and Doublethink. How are these concepts put into use and why? Are they effective??" Once you give me one or two theses to choose from, please briefly explain to me what I should talk about in each body paragraph. Please give one or two thesis statements, so I can choose which fits what I want to talk about. This is a five-paragraph essay, so the thesis needs to be strong to write a strong paper. Thanks!

I don't know about giving the thesis statements to you but understand first what newspeak is and double thinking. Let me give you a real life example North Korea that is by far the closet thing we have to Ing.Soc. in 1984.
Newspeak: is a language that has been modified to limit or restrict cretin ideas, ideologies, and grammar to control the way people. North Koreans for the most part cannot speak or think anything that depicts for their government or leader in negative light.
For example: if someone openly spoke about the poor living conditions or lack of food, that person and their family of three generations would be taken to labor camp to die. Naturally over a period of time would stop complaining in fear of being taken away to die.
Double think: is accepting two mutually contradictory beliefs as correct. Double think falls under Newspeak. It is a way of speaking while trying to hide the truth.
Example: Medicine commercials buy this pill to cure this sickness side effects may be minor.
The commercial is not telling you there is no side effects but rather putting it very nicely so it would not alarm you.
How are these concepts used in the book? Well how is the party using these ideas? What is Winston's job? What ministry does he work in? Why is his job important? and why are the ministries important and how are they used?
Last do you think they work? Why do you think they work? When in real life have these ideas ever been used and where? Do we use these concepts today and where in everyday life?
If you can answer and explain the question I gave you those will put you in the right direction to find your own thesis.

Don't copy and cheat. Explain clearly and give examples and quotes with page numbers.
Draw comparison from the book to everyday and past examples in history. The writing part is not hard, its find what to write and staying on topic that is tricky. Good luck.

A good thesis about Newspeak and Doublethink would focus on the way that the Party uses these concepts to maintain power because power is really the central theme of 1984 and the Party's reason for existing in the first place. Newspeak refers to the alteration of the English language in ways that manipulate reality. Eventually, as Syme, one of the men tasked with creating a Newspeak dictionary, says, the goal is to eventually change human language to the point that people cannot commit thoughtcrimes because they do not have the words to go with concepts that are anathema to the Party. Doublethink (itself a Newspeak word) is the ability to have two irreconcilable thoughts in one's mind at the same time without recognizing that the two are contradictory. It is essential to the kind of brainwashing that the Party does because Party dogma is contrary to observed reality; its real goal is to control truth. Again, a very workable thesis would argue that Newspeak and Doublethink are, probably even more than terror or constant surveillance, essential to the Party's power. Your supporting details, then, should reflect on how these concepts were put into action. Syme tells Winston that the purpose of Newspeak is actually to "narrow the range of thought" by eliminating subtleties in English. Instead of such words as "bad," "terrible" or "horrible," Newspeak leaves its speakers with "ungood" and "doubleplusungood." As Syme says, "What is the purpose of such words as bad?" The purpose, he says, is to establish party orthodoxy, which he defines as "not thinking—not needing to think." If people cannot think, their ideas cannot threaten the Party. Until that day, however, the Party relies on its ability to cultivate "doublethink" in the minds of the people. Your supporting evidence about doublethink could focus on its slogan: "War is Peace, Freedom is Slavery, Ignorance is Strength." The Party relies on people's ability to believe—and at the same time not believe—the reality of this statement. The point is that, even if this slogan is full of contradictions, it is true because the Party says it is. Similarly, Winston's job largely consists of altering past news stories to comport with current Party ideology. After a life of living under such brainwashing, it becomes impossible for people to tell the difference between the truth and the falsehoods; they just accept the Party's version of reality. These examples could be used to support your thesis.
