In The Outsiders, Ponyboy shares that Sodapop, or Soda, is "handsomer" than anyone he knows. He's a little shorter than Ponyboy's oldest brother, Darry. Described as "movie-star" handsome, Soda's hair is long and is a dark golden color that lightens in the summer. He has brown eyes and a face that can be both "reckless and thoughtful." He gets plenty of attention from girls and is compared to a Greek god by Ponyboy. Upon meeting Ponyboy for the first time, Cherry states that Soda is a "doll." She then comments that Ponyboy looks like Soda, which is quite a compliment in Ponyboy's opinion. Ponyboy shares that he loves Soda more than anyone else. Energetic and understanding, Soda can always make Ponyboy smile. With his pleasant, easy-going personality, Soda serves as a buffer between Ponyboy and Darry.
Sodapop, Ponyboy's favorite person and one of his two older brothers, is a likable guy thanks to his easygoing nature and his movie-star good looks.
Ponyboy describes him as the kind of good-looking "that people stop on the street to watch go by." He's tall, but "not as tall" as Darry, their oldest brother, and he has light brown, almost golden hair that goes blonder in the summer. He has brown eyes that show his emotions, dark eyes that "can be gentle and sympathetic one moment and blazing with anger the next." As well, the gas station where Sodapop works with his friend Steve is the busiest in town, and Ponyboy wonders if the reason for this is Sodapop's ability to attract girls, which emphasizes to the reader just how good-looking Sodapop must be.
Ponyboy's descriptions of Sodapop's personality are also positive: he is friendly, has a quick and generous smile, and has such high spirits and such a strong personality that he doesn't need alcohol to get drunk. According to Ponyboy, Sodapop "gets drunk on just plain living."
