All of Gregor's family members begin to treat him as less than human once he undergoes his transformation. He terrifies and disgusts them. Though some try to adjust to the problem of Gregor's new looks more than others, by the end, they all wish he would just die to free them from having to deal with him.
At first, Gregor's sister treats him well, and unlike her parents, she wants to be compassionate and responsible. Her care for Gregor slowly dwindles once she starts having more of a life outside the house. A career takes away her energy, leaving her with little patience for Gregor, and eventually her parents talk of marrying her off, which will switch her attentions away from Gregor entirely.
Gregor's parents lose sympathy for him immediately once he can no longer provide for them. His mother is horrified of him and refuses to be near him, while his father views Gregor as a monster and starts questioning whether or not the giant bug in Gregor's room actually still is Gregor, threatening him with physical violence. Note that one of the apples Gregor's father throws at him permanently damages Gregor, representing how his family's ill-treatment contributes to his eventual desire to die.
Gregor's boss actually shows up at his home, ready to threaten and berate him until he comes in to work. The boss says that Gregor isn't a very good worker and that he's already been on thin ice at the office because his numbers are so low (a claim which Gregor disputes). Once the boss sees Gregor, he runs from the apartment in horror.
Gregor's sister mostly just cries in the beginning. However, her next response is to try to be as kind to Gregor and as helpful to her parents as possible. Unlike anyone else, Grete actually cares about what Gregor wants to eat and what he wants done in his bedroom. She even makes him a little buffet of foods—some more or less disgusting than others—in order to ascertain what he likes best. Once she has to begin working at a shop, however, Grete gradually becomes more and more irritable, spending less time caring for Gregor.
Gregor's mother is completely terrified of Gregor once she sees him. She runs, screaming, from him, jumping into her husband's arms when Gregor snaps his jaws at the spilling coffee. At first, when he was only on the other side of the door, she was sympathetic and insisted that he must be really ill because he would never, otherwise, miss work.
Gregor's father seems to be more angry than anything else. Once he sees Gregor, he treats his son as though Gregor is a monster, not capable of human thought or feeling. His mind immediately turns to the family's financial well-being and making sure that they will be secure financially.
