There are 114 chapters. A chapter in the Koran is called a "surah." Surah is thought to mean, in Arabic, "chapter" or "portion"; however, some scholars believe it was originally a mixture meaning "row," "wall," and even "writing."
Contrary to the Bible writings, each surah represents a single revelatory moment that occurred either at Mecca or Medina.
The chapters of the Koran are neither chronologically nor thematically set out. They go from largest (most amount of verses) to smallest (least amount of verses). The surah with the most amount of verses is composed of 286 verses, whereas the shortest is only three verses long.
Surahs have titles, but these were not part of the revelations made to Muhammad—like everything else, it was easier to refer to each chapter by giving it a name related to its unique characteristics. Even Muhammad himself used the titles of the surahs.
