This article examines how a police officer's level of education and experience affects their use of coercion. The authors look at previous studies which examined the effect of college education on police officers. The counter argument to the importance of education for police officers is that they learn on the job and that experience is the best teacher. 
The article discusses the history of college education in policing. The 1967 President’s Commission on Law Enforcement and the Administration of Justice both suggested that police officers have undergraduate degrees. Though many people extol the benefits of a college education for police officers, it is still not generally a requirement. 
Earlier research has found that college-educated police officers generate fewer civilian complaints than their non-college-educated peers. Other research has examined the benefits of on-the-job education for police officers. The current study looked at how coercion is utilized by police officers. More specifically, it looked at how police officers who graduate from college are different from police officers who attend but do not graduate from college, and from police officers who do not attend college. The study used two data sets of patrol officers: one from Indianapolis, Indiana, and another from St. Petersburg, Florida, during the summers of 1996 and 1997. The results suggested that police officers with any college education used less verbal force than those officers who only had a high school education. Only officers with a college degree used less physical force. Officers with more experience used less verbal force and less physical force.
The results suggest that officers with a college education and officers with more experience use less force. The authors suggest that experienced officers should be placed in high-risk areas on patrols. What other implications do you think this study has?
